The State Board voted Thursday to give the local school board 60 days to resolve several issues, or it would suspend the local board.
Weldon City Schools hasn't had a permanent superintendent in years and has had vacancies and turnover in high-level positions.
The school system has also been performing below academic standards and struggled financially.
To get back into the State Board’s good graces, the local school board must, among other things, approve a set of recommended changes proposed by Interim Superintendent Rodney Shotwell — a superintendent approved by the local board and back by the State Board as well. The local board, however, has not implemented the changes, according to the State Board.
The local board must also undergo training on what their board’s powers are and aren’t.
The local board can appear before the State Board of Education within 45 days to respond to the notice approved by the State Board on Thursday.
Messages for the school system and board chairman were not immediately returned Thursday.
